We were delighted earlier this month to be asked by Huddersfield Town to attend their training ground in order to discuss financial planning with the first team players.
As an official partner of the club, and both presenters being keen Town fans, we were excited to take part and also to highlight the work we are doing across different groups to promote financial education in the wider community. We have previously presented to the club’s employees as well as its Womens Plus event and are planning a series of sessions with students at Kirklees College.

    Interactive Elements

The session with players covered financial planning generally and why action is required at an early age, along with different types of savings and investments. Everyone’s goals are different determined by each person’s desired lifestyle, so individual planning is essential to establishing how much you will need when you retire.
It was amazing to get some interaction from the players and genuine engagement for the subject matter. We felt many attending really got something from the session, and we were very impressed at what a great group of guys they were.

    Next Steps: Ongoing Support

To continue supporting the players in their financial education, we provided them with additional reading materials tailored to their needs, along with resources for further learning. We also offered one-on-one consultations for those who wanted more personalised advice. Looking ahead, we are planning follow-up sessions to build on this foundation, ensuring that the players remain informed and proactive about their financial futures.

We managed to capture the event and reactions in the following video so please take a look.

    Player Reactions and Feedback

The video captures the positive reception from the players. Goalkeeper Jacob Chapman noted, “I liked it a lot, something that I certainly need more knowledge on and help with… I’ve learned a fair bit.” This sentiment was echoed by Defender Brodie Spencer, who appreciated how the material was broken down into understandable terms: “As a young lad, when you hear all these big words, it can be a bit frightening, but the way they explain it to you is very good.”

Danny McAllister, Managing Director, concluded, “Try and plan what your goals are, set your own goals not somebody else’s, then go out and smash them.”

    Key Takeaways

    • Engagement: The players were genuinely interested in learning more about financial planning, and their engagement demonstrated a clear recognition of the importance of this knowledge for their future.
    • Tailored Advice: Each player’s financial goals are unique, and the session emphasized the need for personalised planning to meet individual lifestyle aspirations.
    • Practical Examples: We shared practical examples that resonated with the players, helping them connect theoretical concepts to real-life applications.

Thomas Johnson, Director of Financial Planning, summed up the session’s success: “One of the key challenges of being a financial planner is conveying the urgency of ‘why now’. It’s brilliant to see such a young team grasping these concepts.”
